What is Symbols?

See the introduction to Symbols

How do I get started?

See introduction to get Symbols.

Is Symbols for building UIkit/design systems? websites? web apps?

Yes, all of the above!

The current most common use case for Symbols is building UIkits/design systems and web apps, but a core goal of Symbols is to be a flexible visual development platform.

Is Symbols no-code? Low-code?

First, what is the meaning of these?

  • No-code: You do not write any code. Usable to non-developers.

  • Low-code: Expects you to write at least snippets of code. For developers.

Depending on the task, Symbols can be used in either fashion:

  • No-code: You can build and make changes to your design system without writing a single line of code.

  • Low-code: Alternatively, you can choose to write code to build UIkits such as reusable components, and complex web applications.

How does Symbols work with design tools? Should I be doing all of my design in design tools first?

Currently in it’s early access release, Symbols doesn’t provide integration with design tools. However integration with Figma and other design toos is planned.

URL links to design files in Figma, can be linked to the editor of a component or page, to make it easier for developers to reference the design as you build it in code. Learn more here...

How does Symbols compare to other tools?

See Symbols vs other tools.

How does Symbols’s low-code framework (DOMQL) compare to other frameworks?

See comparisons of DOMQL vs other frameworks.

Is Symbols limited to building static UIkits /web pages?

No. Symbols can build components and pages that have dynamic data and behavior. Code is used to build the visual parts, and provide the dynamic data and behavior—either using code components or the overrides API.

Can Symbols work with existing code components or design systems?

Currently we do not support porting over existing components or design systems into Symbols. However we do offer a growing component library of 250+ components (see Symbols library), with them hooked up to an easy to customise advanced design system.

How do I create a responsive page or component, with differences on

mobile vs desktop

See responsive design.

How do I import assets from another project?

See importing projects.

How do I copy/paste across projects?

Copying/pasting across Symbols projects works with Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V (or Cmd-C, Cmd-V on Mac).

How do I save and restore a version history of my project?

Version control is currently being worked on. However you can export your project’s data, including copying to Github.

How do I deploy a website? How do I deploy to Netlify, Vercel, or another hosting provider?

See publish actions.

How do I learn how best to use Symbols and it’s low-code framework (DOMQL)?

All documentation on platform and our framework contains both interactive and video tutorials, documentation and code examples in DOMQL....(Click on the one you want to view)

Yes! See Starter Kits.

How do I reuse design system / project assets such as components, pages,

content etc across projects?

See General Workflow Tips.

Can I use Github with Symbols?

I am having issues with Symbols! Is it a bug?

If you are having issues with Symbols, please refer to troubleshooting. If you are still encountering errors, please contact us or submit feedback.

Can my UIkit made in Symbols work with existing code components or design systems?

(N/A)

Can I import existing code components or design systems into Symbols?

At this current time, Symbols does not support importing of other component libraries. However this is planned :)

Can I use other frameworks or languages such as React, CSS, HTML etc?

Whilst you can, we don’t advise to due to certain features of he platform such as the editor and layers, not working properly.

Our low-code framwork( DOMQL) was built from the ground up to be easy to use with minimal setup required, despite offering big benefits to frontend development compared to other frameworks. See how DOMQL compares to other frameworks in Symbols vs other tools.
